Turning Money Stress Into Financial Confidence

Capital One | UX Design, Visual Design | 2017

Overview

Overview

Because money and life are deeply intertwined, money can often be a big cause of stress and anxiety.

Capital One’s free Money Coaching program tries to address that by offering a series of values-based, action-oriented conversations with trained life coaches. The goal of the program is to help people find greater alignment between their money and what matters to them.

Going digital: scaling the Money Coaching program

Going digital: scaling the Money Coaching program

Capital One’s Money Coaching program was originally designed with a suite of 8 paper tools that catered to different client needs.

Coaches used these tools to guide clients through the process of capturing their thoughts and feelings in a tactile, visual way. The paper tools were helpful for clients and coaches in the moment, but as the Money Coaching program continued to scale, tracking the impact of the overall program, as well as individual client progress proved to be challenging.

In response to a business need to modernize the paper tools, our team collaborated closely with the Money Coaches to transform two paper tools, “Map Your Money” and “Scale Your Spending,” and design them for use on an iPad.

Tool Overview: "Shift Your Spending"

I led the design of one of two tools called “Shift Your Spending.” This tool aims to help Coaches reframe budgeting as an exercise in aligning spending with life priorities.

The tool allows Coaches to guide clients through a two-part activity:1) Prioritizing spending based what is important to the client2) Finding greater balance in their spending

Along the way, we regularly sought feedback on in-progress tools with our Money Coaches to ensure that the tools would complement the conversations.

Outcome

Outcome

In four months time, we designed two iPad experiences that would better accommodate a diverse set of coaching styles, enhance the ability for clients and coaches to have meaningful conversations, and ultimately lead to more positive outcomes for clients.
