Building savings confidence
Capital One | Behavior Change, Research, Product Design | 2017
Overview
‘Save what's left over, save after every paycheck’ - many of us have been taught that this is the “right” way to save. But what happens when these strategies just don't fit your life and budget?
Through extensive rounds of research, prototyping, and user testing, we designed a mobile experience that gives customers a new and simple way to start saving and build financial confidence.

Opportunity
For many Americans who are struggling to make ends meet, traditional savings tactics can seem truly insurmountable and even lead to the belief that saving money is impossible.
This reality prevents people from building savings and leaves them vulnerable. Our team was tasked with understanding the needs of our most vulnerable customers, and designing a product that could help increase their financial resilience.
Product Overview
Sprint Savings is a mobile experience inside the Capital One app. It is designed to allow customers to quickly set up daily automatic savings on their own terms and help them feel good about their progress. The experience aims to increase comfort and familiarity with saving while building financial confidence.
Customers choose how much to save ($5, $7 or $10 per day) and how long to save for (7, 10 or 14 days). Along the way, encouraging notifications and messaging keep them informed and reinforce healthy financial habits.
Outcome
This experience was launched in a limited pilot to 10,000 customers in October 2017. This body of research has gone on to inform several other initiatives around helping customers save and build financial resilience.
